Plot twists

How odd.

I'd outlined a chapter of Dead Line to write today which involved Vixen, in plain clothes, going to the church to look up records about Harold. I'd allocated 300 words out of 2000 for this. What actually happened was Vixen and the local vicar, Rev. Mackenzie end up fliting and spending the whole 2.1K in each other's company. It advanced the plot, so I let them be.

I say, did you hear the one about the vicar and the assassin...

This is why I had to chop 110,000 down to 99,000 to fit a publisher's print requirements. Or cut my 13,000 word Doctor Who story down to 9,000. The characters just get to talking and stuff happens (tm).

This can be one of two things: a really great bit of character/plot development that will add a new level of vitality to your tale OR a self-indulgent side trip. If you're like me, you may need an editor to tell you which it is.
