Captain Black

Hi,

As I'm a new Novel Racer, I thought I'd tell you a bit about myself...

About Me

I'm a forty-something bloke living in outer London. Interests include all things technical and scientific, both real and in fiction. Also running, skiing, mountain biking, reading from multiple genres and, of course, writing.

My Story

In February 2007 my software development job was made redundant. Since then, apart from a few temping bits-and-pieces, I've not been able to find permanent work, nor even decide on a suitable career path. An upside of this is that I've now had the opportunity to begin a new serious hobby of fiction writing. I still say hobby, as I consider myself an amateur and I'm still going to try to find another "main job" to earn a living. Having said that, I'd love to get my writing work published. Who wouldn't?

My Works

I always seem to have several writing projects on the go at once. Full details can be found on my web site, but here's a quick summary. All are at the first draft stage, unless otherwise indicated.

TitleTypeCount/ExpectedDescription
The Bridge Across ForeverNovel35,191/58,000My main project. SF/Thriller/Mystery.
InsightNovel36,398/80,000Co-authoring with a friend. SF/Future dystopia.
Blood On The RooftopsNovella13,060/30,000Crime thriller.
The Wild One's HideoutNovella16,649 (editing)SF/Adventure.
Kim & MarkBlog7,546/?Weekly, prompt-driven story. Crime/Romance.

I'm also working on various short stories but I haven't listed them here. It would be too boring.

My Places

My web site: http://www.kevinmachin.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk
My blog: http://cloud-base.blogspot.com

I hope I haven't bored you too much with this detail. I'll try not to hijack the NR blog like this in the future.

Happy writing!

Too late to apologize now. I lost track somewhere in the middle of the third paragraph. And throwing in charts and tables? Nodded off right here at my desk. Fortunately, this put me in step with everyone else here at the office.

And oh yeah: Welcome to the party.

I'm in awe. Having only just mastered photos in my blog (although they never quite go where I want), to see a table... You realise techie questions will come winging in your direction. Like, "Where's the on/off switch?"

I am not only impressed by the table but by the number of wip's you have on the go!! Welcome.

Welcome, Captain. Brace yourself for a barrage of tech questions from phobes like me.

I, too, am in awe of the table, but I'm even more amazed that you have enough projects on the go to warrant one. Welcome to the group.

Thanks to everyone for the nice welcome. Feel free to fire off any technical questions. No guarantees though.

Kevin K: Don't worry, I almost sent myself to sleep when composing the post ;o)

For those of you interested in tables, you might find this link of interest.

Welcome again!

I too lost a job in software development in 2007: I was made redundant in June. I too have been mostly writing fiction since then. But made practically no income from it, despite being already published and indeed landing a new deal in that time (haven't been paid for that yet, and not likely to see any money for several months to come - be warned, everyone: Money from publishers is generally VERY slow to arrive).

So. There you go. Points of contact and all that.
