I have just a definitive "we can't be definitive" response from the Society of Authors. They think I would probably be in breach of copyright, but without seeing the finished manuscript would not be able to say. I'm now wishing I'd kept my mouth shut about the whole thing.
Having had time to think about what I would do if I got this kind of response, I have decided to be bloody-minded (it's my default setting) and go ahead with the book exactly as I want to write it. Should legal action ensue upon publication (there's optimism for you), I will count it as good publicity.

Good for you!
I'm glad to hear it:-)
Bravo!!!!
That's what I'd do.
Personally, I'm holding out for a full bookburning.
Good on you, I love a fighting spirit. x
The default stance from Wells' agents seems to be "arse-covering mode", so perhaps they won't follow it up and you'll be safe. After all, isn't it good publicity for them?
Good! Glad to hear it :)
My thanks to you all. I forget how fragile my resolve can sometimes be and having the support you all give is just wonderful.
Altogether now: "Build a bonfire, build a bonfire..."
Good for you, Graeme. =o)
Go for it Graeme!

Yay! That's the spirit!
