Yes, this means it's back out there with the potential to create a new customer who might go on to buy other books by the author first hand.

That is the new edition that was just out last week which means someone either nicked it from the warehouse or it was a review copy. Either way you can't control these things and if someone reads it and enjoys it then that's cool.

One of my friends throws books away when she's finished with them (can you believe it), so I'm all for second-hand-book boxes.

Leigh - OMG. My 11 year old threw all her books out recently. I rescued them all and sent them to a charity shop.

Rowan - You're exactly right. I'll often pick up a new-to-me author secondhand then go out and buy up the backlist.

I completely agree that it's great marketing and it has the potential to make new fans. (And I love second hand books but have never stopped buying new ones.)
