Memories of Michael

Good morning, Novel Racers. I'm serving tea, coffee and fruit juice in my garden this morning. Please help yourselves. The bacon is sizzling under the grill ready for bacon rolls all round.

It's one year today since Michael Jackson died and it's only right that this week's Novel Racers' coffee morning should be dedicated to him and our collective memories of his music. His music will live on, but how sad it is that what was to come is lost forever, and we will never hear the songs he would have released in the future, had he not died at fifty.

My favourite song is 'Ben' because it makes me smile when I think of my lovely, gentle, black labrador called Ben (1984-1998). He loved children and I used to take him to the school every day. He lapped up all the attention, but I lost count of how many ice-creams he stole from unsuspecting toddlers! I was forever having to queue up at the ice-cream van outside the school to replace them. Every time I hear the song, I remember my Ben and the deadly efficient way he used to look completely innocent before deftly turning his head to claim yet another tasty prize!

I think I have to say that my most vivid memory of Michael Jackson is the first glimpse of his new nose. I remember my hubby saying that he ought to ask for his money back!

What is your favourite Michael Jackson song and why? What picture or video of Michael Jackson stands out in your mind?

I'll always remember this date because he died on my son's 18th birthday, as did that 1970s icon Farrah Fawcett.

He was such a talented man, but I was never really a fan. I do feel so sorry for those poor children. It can't be easy being going through life with a name like Blanket.

I have to admit though that all yesterday I had one of his songs going round in my head. Now, I've got to try and remember which one it was...

Can't do one song but I can do one album - Thriller. I was sixteen and it brings back so many teeny memories whenever I hear anything from it.

I love love love 'Off the Wall'. This is a great song and always makes me want to dance. Shame it doesn't get played in clubs and pubs cuz its a tune!! 'Smooth Criminal' is a very close second.

I remember sitting down with my whole family to watch the first showing of the 'Remember the Time' video and my brother pointing out that his feet were a different colour to rest of his body. I didnt care what people said about him. I still adored him and still can't believe he's gone :(

Great post and very thoughtful x

Thriller's one of my favourites but there were many depending onmy mood. Such a shame - what a tragic life. And having had a really bad time with insomnia several years ago, I sympathise with anyone who has trouble sleeping.

She's Out Of My Life is my favourite song, it gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it. But I also love the whole Thriller album.

My eighteen year old is currently very much into MJ, so I'm hearing all these classic tracks a lot!

Don't throw rotten tomatoes at me but I really wasn't a fan. I can appreciate how talented he was but I've always been terrorised by how deeply unhappy he must have been.

I was never much of a fan, but I was in Washington DC last year when the news swept around that he'd died. I heard it from a homeless man who was shouting that he was dead. It took over the city and it was a night I'll never forget. There was no other topic of conversation, and I've rarely spoken to so many strangers. Everyone wanted to share the news, amazing.

Not a huge fan of MJ but 'The Man in the Mirror' stands out as a little favourite of mine - cannot deny his talent and his huge fan base and I remember thinking his music videos were ground-breaking at the time.

Thanks for all the comments. There's no doubt he was a talented musician, but, like Debs, I wonder what effect their strange upbringing has had on his children.

You have to wonder just how much of his own personality was 'nature' and how much 'nurture'.
