You make some good points about editing. The whole editing process freaks me right out I have to admit!
I am also wondering who the author is you mentioned, the one with the pointless chapter/scene. Are his initials JP?

Such good advice. My first published novel was originally written in the third person and whilst I recognized a decent story in there, I could see - round about the time I was finishing the final draft - that it really should be a first person narrative. It shed about 35 thousand words and was so much better for it. Well, I think so. The fact it has been out of print for so long tells another story, but there you go.

LOL Sarah, no. Not JP. The initials are EH, but that's all I'm sayin'. ;o) Although, I have read a JP that had some unnecessary scenes.
Nice post B.E. Ripping out the unnecessaries is painful....but less so if you store them somewhere in a 'Waste not, Want not' file.

I agree with you, I wrote about 200K words of the book I have just delivered to my publisher and discarded around 75K words. It was painful but worth it as my editor is really pleased with it and tell me it might be the best thing I've written!
